What is the International Mention?
The International Doctor Mention, which gives added value to the degree. This may be included on the front of the doctoral degree.
The title of Doctor or Doctorate may include the words “International Doctorate” on the front, provided that the following conditions are met:
- During the period of training required to obtain the PhD degree, the PhD student must have spent at least three months outside Spain at one or more prestigious higher education institutions or research centres in order to complement and reinforce their research training. In the case of several stays, at least one of them will have a minimum duration of one month. Stays and activities must be endorsed by the Director and authorised by the Academic Committee and, once they have been carried out and validated by the host institution, they will be included in the doctoral student’s activities document.
- Part of the doctoral thesis, at least the summary and conclusions, must have been written and defended in one of the usual languages for scientific communication in the field of study, other than any of the official languages in Spain. This rule does not apply when the stays, reports and experts come from a Spanish-speaking country.
- At least two of the experts reporting on the thesis referred to in Article 13.2 must belong to a non-Spanish higher education institution or research institute. These experts may not coincide with the researchers who received the PhD student and carried out tutoring or supervision tasks at the host institution.
- At least one expert from a non-Spanish higher education institution or research centre, with the title of Doctor, other than the person responsible for the stay mentioned in paragraph a), must have been a member of the thesis examining board.
PROCEDURE
Doctoral students wishing to undertake an international stay, in order to obtain the “International Doctorate” award, must request authorisation from the Academic Committee of their Doctoral Programme, with the prior approval of their directors. To do so, they must submit their application to the Doctoral School’s Administrative Unit
REQUEST FOR DEFENCE
When applying for the deposit of their doctoral thesis, doctoral students must upload the following compulsory documentation to the doctoral studies management platform, together with the ordinary documentation:
- Research stay certificate: This will be issued by the person in charge of the research team in which the stay has been carried out. It must indicate the period of the stay and the training or research carried out.
- Two reports from PhD experts belonging to a NON-Spanish higher education institution or research institute. They must use the following report models and include the anagram and the seal of the Institution together with the signature of the expert:

Defence panel. At least one expert with a doctoral degree from a non-Spanish higher education institution or research institute who has NOT been responsible for the research stay and who has NOT signed the two expert reports provided.
The secretary of the examining board will certificará that the defence of the thesis has been carried out in compliance with the regulations on the mention of “International Doctorate”
